This residence grew into a two-phased project: an addition to the existing house in 2007 and secondly, a separate “carriage house” garage with a “man cave,” designed in 2018. (currently under construction)
Site: The original house was a small, Cape Cod style home set in a clearing on a wooded 35,400 SF lot.
Client’s Vision: The client’s desire was to increase the size of their home to accommodate their family’s lifestyle. They wanted a light-filled home with more interaction and better flow for entertaining throughout the year. We spent several design sessions discussing aspirations and options for their home before settling on a design direction.
Resulting Design: We made changes throughout to create a fluid design of subtle personal interactions within the home. Upon entering, there is a path of layered space leading through the home to the rear family room. This space visually extends through the rear windows to the landscape and specimen cedar tree beyond.
Moving along this path, the ceiling level remains constant while the floor steps down twice. The level changes allow for higher ceilings creating a change of scale and experience moving from a cozy front living room through the home to a taller, light-filled family room.
Beginning in the dining room, a floor-to-ceiling ribbon of doors and windows creates a visual extension from the interior to adjoining deck and yard. The ribbon wraps around the family room, terminating at 3 large windows, reestablishing the exterior symmetry on the rear wall.
Client’s Vision (Carriage house): The clients wanted to add a separate 3-car garage/workshop in a carriage-house style. Placement of the garage and its relationship to the home became the primary concern. We did not want to see a large imposing structure behind the house facing the street or home.
Resulting Design (Carriage house): The solution was to place the garage at a similar, but reversed, angle that the home has to the driveway. This creates a narrower glancing view of the facade, preventing the garage from imposing itself on the home. The space captured between the two structures, accessed from the drive, becomes a terrace energized by the cascading steps from the deck and the specimen cedar tree.
