Site: This home is on a Puget Sound view lot overlooking City of Mukilteo, Whidbey Island and ferry crossing. The rear 20% of the lot was unbuildable due to a steep hillside. With building setbacks, all that remained was a small building footprint, necessitating a 3-story scheme.

Client’s Vision: The couple wanted to separate the guest bedrooms from their main living areas for privacy. The client’s main desire was a light filled home showcasing the views while allowing a transparency between the main living areas and third floor master suite.

Resulting Design: Consequently the home is wrapped around an interior light well allowing light to flood the master bedroom and second floor main entry, dining and living areas with visual transparences between the main floor and third floor master bedroom.

The lower floor was designed as a daylight basement as a result of the steep topography. This floor contains a garage, storage, laundry, bath and 2 guest bedrooms.

The main entrance, the second level, is approached through a courtyard under a vine-covered arbor.  The covered entry porch serves both as entry to the home and home office. A second floor deck with its commanding views is situated 3 feet below the living room so deck furniture will not obstruct sightlines. A third story sundeck off the master bedroom suite sits above the second floor deck.
